Micro-molder, compounder named finalists for BIOMEDevice Boston Innovation prize

Our friends at Qmed have announced the 10 finalists in the running for the BIOMEDevice Boston Innovation prize, two of which will be familiar to the PlasticsToday audience: MTD Micro Molding (Charlton, MA) and RTP Co. (Winona, MN). The program recognizes innovations among exhibitors at the event, which is co-located with PLASTEC New England on April 13 and 14 at the Boston Convention Center. Readers are invited to help narrow the field to five finalists by voting on the Qmed site. The winner will be announced at the exhibition and conference.

Hundreds of suppliers of products and services and a full slate of conference sessions await attendees at the co-located  BIOMEDevice Boston and PLASTEC New England events coming to the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center on April 13 and 14.

MTD Micro Molding set up shop in 1972 making miniature connector molds for electronics applications. It evolved from being a manufacturer of miniature tools and dies to providing micro-molding services, which it now does exclusively for the medical device industry. The company has built an enviable reputation among medical device OEMs as the go-to precision micro molder for complex plastic parts. A unique advantage, says the company, is having the tool builder, process engineer, metrologist and automation specialist under one roof.

RTP Co. was singled out for the development of tough thermoplastic compounds that withstand exposure to harsh chemical disinfectants without a loss in strength, functionality or material integrity. Materials with robust chemical resistance are in demand in healthcare settings, as hospitals multiply the frequency and intensity of wipe downs to prevent the spread of hospital-acquired infections. As noted in an article reporting on the new material published in PlasticsToday last summer, the RTP 2000 HC series thermoplastic compounds are “suited for molding an array of hospital equipment and plastic housings that require frequent disinfection, such as mobile ultrasound and x-ray machines, enteral feeding devices, drug infusion pumps and blood filtration equipment.”

The other finalists are Alpha Wire (Elizabeth, NJ); Formlabs (Somerville, MA); Keyence Corp. of America (Woodcliff Lake, NJ); Maxon (Fall River, MA); ProPlate (Anoka, MN); Proto Labs (Maple Plain, MN); SUSE (Cambridge, MA); and Vention Medical (Marlborough, MA).
